Illinois

The State of Illinois has the Open Meetings Act and the Freedom of Information Act to govern over basic accessibility to public meetings and public documents.

In Illinois, if you believe a public body has violated one of these two laws, you have the option of filing suit in court or you may file a complaint with the Public Access Counselors (PAC) office.  You cannot do both for the same violation.  Once you file a complaint with the PAC office about a specific circumstance, you cannot file suit in court.  Once you file suit in court about a specific circumstance, you cannot file a complaint with the PAC office.

On this page, we offer a sampling of what the core of our website is all about:  agendas and meeting minutes.  We display the 5 most recent additions to our library based on category, which includes Public Access Counselor Opinions regarding Freedom of Information Act and Open Meetings Act violations and the proposed remedies for said violations.  If you want to return to our calendar, return to our home page.
